Tech briefing: Apple trims iPhone 18 Pro orders, Cloudflare buys Deno, and memory chips wobble

The AI build-out is now showing up in phone supply chains and developer tooling. Five stories from the past week, and why they matter to app makers.

The AI boom is no longer just a story about models and data centers. This week it reached the phone in your pocket and the tools we use every day. Here are five stories the Frogion team is watching.

Apple cuts iPhone 18 Pro orders

According to Nikkei Asia, Apple reduced its October component orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by 15 to 20%. An executive quoted in the report blamed surging memory-chip prices linked to the AI data-center build-out. Memory that used to go into phones is now being bid up by hyperscalers.

Memory chips sell off

A semiconductor selloff spread through Asia and Europe, with SK Hynix falling more than 10% and Samsung 7.4% in one session. The IMF's October financial stability report named a collapse in AI-related investment as a near-term threat and estimated that a steep drop could cut global GDP by 1.1% by 2028.

Cloudflare acquires Deno

Cloudflare has acquired Deno, and the entire team is moving to Cloudflare Workers. The standalone Deno runtime and Deno Deploy will wind down over the next year. Deno had raised about $26 million. If any of your backends run on Deno Deploy, now is the time to plan a migration.

Microsoft Maia 300 and Nvidia in China

Microsoft unveiled the Maia 300 accelerator: 288 GB of HBM4 memory at 18 TB/s, 950 watts, and a claimed 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems, with multi-gigawatt deployments planned from 2027. Meanwhile, IDC data reported by Reuters shows Nvidia's share of China's data-center AI chip market fell to 34% in the first half of 2026, with shipments down 44% year over year, while Huawei took 28%.

Smaller items

  • Atomic Machines came out of stealth with $250 million to build micro-machines directly from code, starting with cooling and power switches for AI data centers.
  • NTT Data is in final talks to build Anthropic a 500 MW data center in Osaka.
  • Amazon's warehouse robot fleet passed one million units.
  • A community MCP server now wraps more than 120 Google Workspace tools behind a single endpoint with OAuth 2.1.

Why it matters for app makers

Pricier memory means pricier phones and slower upgrade cycles, so plan to support older devices for longer. Consolidation in developer tooling, such as the Deno deal, is a reminder to keep backends portable and avoid deep lock-in to a single runtime.
